10x10 Mini Capsule: Coastal Grandmother Style
"August is like the Sunday of summer."
I recently stumbled upon this quote, and honestly, it's hard to argue with it!
We are already into August, and even though the summer is well and truly here, somehow, I started thinking about the upcoming fall this weekend. There is always something exciting about the new season, and as a big autumn lover, I can't wait for cozy fashion and all these cozy layers, knitwear, and warm, earthy tones.
However, I couldn't imagine closing the summer season without mentioning the 'coastal grandmother' style at least once on my blog, so today, I'm happy to be back with the new mini-capsule idea based on my favorite aesthetic!
What is the 'coastal grandmother' style?
You've probably seen this term pop up on social media or in fashion magazines. Still, just in case you haven't—back in March, the content creator Lex Nicoleta posted a video on TikTok saying she coined the term 'coastal grandmother' to describe a beachy, summery, and refined aesthetic. In her video, she says:
"If you love Nancy Meyers movies, coastal vibes, recipes, and cooking, Ina Garten, interiors, and more, there is a good chance you might be a 'coastal grandmother." And then she adds: "You don't have to be a grandmother to be a 'coastal grandmother.' It's for anyone and everyone."
And when it comes to fashion. The 'coastal grandmother' style is not about specific items or luxurious brands. Again, it's more about comfort, breezy minimal aesthetic, and relaxed but elevated elegance—natural materials like linen and cashmere, clean lines, subtle prints, soft neutrals, and soothing blues. And that's why I can identify with this style so much! Such items as linen shirts, beige sweaters, creme straight-leg trousers, comfy sandals, and straw baskets are already the foundation of my current summer capsule. So, this season, I can recreate many 'coastal grandmother' outfit inspirations just by using what I already have in my closet. The same thing with today's mini capsule idea—I used only classic, timeless clothing items and simple accessories that most of you probably own already.
I often read that 'coastal grandmother' is the huge fashion trend after it went viral on TikTok this summer, but I wouldn't call it that way. I see it as more than just a trend, and I'm with Lex—no beach house or grandkids are needed to embrace this slow, joyful lifestyle! It's the way of living, enjoying time with family and friends, and cherishing small daily pleasures like gardening, curling up with a good book, or whipping up a wholesome meal while listening to some cozy jazz or classic tunes in the background. This way of living has existed long before TikTok, and thankfully, it seems like it's here to stay.
With all that in mind, I wanted to touch on how fashion trends and social media often fuel unnecessary consumerism, so below, I'm sharing two interesting podcasts:
The first one (here) is about finding your inner 'coastal grandmother' and understanding this lifestyle better. Alden Wicker, Rebbeca Jennings, and Jennifer Ebelhar also talk about how trends circulate online and how they encourage consumerism.
The second podcast (here) also leans into that coastal vibe 'coastal vibe,' but Rachael Harrah also speaks about being stylish without the pressure, cost, and consumption of keeping up with the latest trends.
If you're feeling inspired by the 'coastal grandma' aesthetic and want to sprinkle a bit of that slow coastal charm into your daily life, I created a new Pinterest board and Spotify playlist here and here - I hope they will keep you inspired:)
